Delirium Red from the Huyghe Brewery is a Belgian Fruit Ale that pours a deep dark red color; its light pink, compact head leaves fine lacing as it recedes.

It offers a soft, sour cherry aroma with hints of almond, berry, banana, and clove.

Taste is sweet and fruity, but not cloyingly so - bready malt flavor and some tartness add balance.

The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with a fine, creamy carbonation. The 8% ABV is not apparent, and the finish is dry, clean, and crisp. 16.9 oz / 50 cl can (4-can pack)

Located in the city of Melle in the East Flanders region of Belgium, the Huyghe Brewery was founded in 1906 when Leon Huyghe purchased a local brewery ("Den Appel") whose history in the region went back at least several centuries, to the mid-1600s.

Under his stewardship, the brewery survived both World Wars and actually managed to thrive; but by the 1970s and into the early 1980s sales of the staple brews – then based on lager and Dortmund style beers – were in decline. The brewery found itself – like so many other small family owned breweries of the time – unable to compete successfully with Flanders' larger commercial breweries.

In 1985 the Huyghe Brewery refocused its efforts to concentrate production on high quality, high alcohol, specialty ales only. The flagship brew of this style, Delirium Tremens, was introduced to high acclaim in 1987 and the brewery's fortunes flourished once again.

Today, still helmed by the Huyghe family, the Huyghe Brewery produces and distributes award winning specialty ales to at least eight countries including the United States, Canada, Italy and Japan.

This did not disappoint. Great flavor balance...not too much or too little cherry. Slightly sweeter than lower-alcohol beers, but you know that. Not tasting much malt, as I recall it was still there. Alcohol level about double of regular lagers and ales. Thank goodness I do not live next to the brewery,
Joe

I had this beer tonight and I am AMAZED at the wonderful cherry flavor this beer has!!! It's smooth, flavorful and NO aftertaste....at all!! I have found my new fav in beers. I could drink this all night and love every drop. If you like fruit flavor, especially cherry, this is a beer you absolutely need to try. I'm going to ask for my store to order it. We have the regular now. $20 for 4 cans seemed like alot but you figure, you pay $5 for a beer in a restaurant so....treat yourself at home too!!! Thank you guys for a great beer!! Bonus is I collect pink elephants!! The whole reason I tried it in the first place.
