Spencer Brewery at St. Joseph's Abbey, USA
The first certified Trappist brewery in the United States, Spencer Brewery is a project born of tradition and necessity. For over 60 years, the monks at St. Joseph's Abbey have cooked and packed jams and jellies at their monastery under the Trappist Preserves label. Looking to the future, they saw a need for an additional enterprise that will support their community and charities in the years to come. Observing Trappist tradition, they named their brewery, and the beer, Spencer after their beloved town of Spencer, Massachusetts. St. Feuillien, Belgium
When an Irish monk named Foylan or Foillan (later translated into the French "Feuillien") was killed in the village of Le Roeulx, a chapel was built in his honor. Over time, it became the Abbey St. Feuillien du Roeulx. The abbey's brewery, however, was destroyed in the French Revolution. In 1873 the Friart family resumed brewing operations and to this day a portion of the proceeds is donated to charitable causes, making St. Feuillien one of Belgium's oldest and most authentic Abbey Ales.
