Tre Fontane Tripel (ABV 8.5%) is brewed with eucalyptus grown and harvested by the monks of Tre Fontane Abbey, who, since 1873, have been known for their eucalyptus oils, extracts, and liqueur.

It has a warm, hazy golden blond color and a frothy off-white head. The aroma marries sweet, malty notes of fruit and honey with spicy herbal notes of mint and eucalyptus. Medium-bodied, its sweetness is balanced by some hoppy bitterness and the spice of the eucalyptus, which never dominates. The full carbonation gives a dry finish to the palate, while the high alcohol adds refined warmth. 11.2 oz (capped) bottles.

Monastic life at the Trappist monastery known as Tre Fontane Abbey (English: Three Fountains Abbey; Latin: Abbatia trium fontium ad Aquas Salvias), or the Abbey of Saints Vincent and Anastasius, goes back to the first centuries of Christianity. Located in Rome, the church and monastery were built by Pope Honorius I in 626 and given to the Benedictines.

It was held through the centuries by Cluniacs and Cistercians until its suppression at the Napoleonic invasion in 1812. By this time the surroundings were poorly drained and malarial. In 1867 Pius IX committed the monastery to the Cistercians. A community was sent there in 1868 from La Grande Trappe to institute the regular life and to improve the healthiness of the lands. They inaugurated modern drainage methods and planted numerous eucalyptus and other trees, so that the vicinity became nearly as healthful as Rome.

In 1873 the monks began production of Eucalyptus oils, extracts, and liqueurs. In 2000, when they began brewing beer, it seemed appropriate to flavor it with the eucalyptus with which the abbey had become identified. Several years of intense work produced an ale of fine quality, and in May of 2015, Tre Fontane Tripel was awarded the ATP brand (Authentic Trappist Product). Tre Fontane is the 11th Trappist brewery in the world and the only one in Italy.

A Treat To Drink.

It pours a dark amber with a medium sized, white, long lasting head. The aroma is spices, Belgian style yeast, dried fruit and candy sugar. The taste is bready malts, cinnamon, nutmeg, biscuits and a bit of menthol. This is very well brewed and was a treat to drink.

I rate beer on a scale of 1-5. I gave this trappist beer a 4, meaning I would go out of my way to have again. The eucalyptus flavor was unique and pleasant.

I would describe this beer as spicy candy. A little sweeter and spicier than typical Belgian style Tripels. I think if I didn't know it came from Italy I would still think Italy when drinking it. It was a very enjoyable refreshing beer. It's not readily available here in Arizona and with shipping it's a little expensive to have it shipped. But I might order a few more at some point. I was pleasantly surprised with how drinkable it was.
