Spencer Trappist Ale is America's first Trappist beer, inspired by the traditional refectory ales known as patersbier ("fathers' beer" in Flemish) in Belgium. These sessionable beers are brewed by the monks for their dinner table and are typically available only at the monastery.

Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued ale with fruity accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. The beer is unfiltered and unpasteurized, preserving live yeast that naturally carbonates the beer in the bottle and keg and contributes to the beer's flavor and aroma. 11.2 oz. bottle.

Spencer Brewery at St. Joseph's Abbey: Spencer, Massachusetts

Spencer Brewery is a project born of tradition and necessity. For over 60 years, the monks at St. Joseph's Abbey have cooked and packed jams and jellies at their monastery under the Trappist Preserves label. This business has supported them, while providing wholesome monastic work and charitable assistance to persons in need. However, looking to the future, they saw a need for an additional enterprise that will support their community and charities in the years to come.

Just a few years ago, one of the brothers expressed interest in brewing and even did some training at a local craft brewery. Over time, his passion for brewing affected some other monks, who recognized that brewing was a very traditional monastic enterprise. Thus, when the time came to re-chart the economic path for the monastery's future, the idea of a brewery gained traction.

With the blessing of the abbot, they embarked upon a two-year data-gathering mission. They visited each Trappist brewery to learn everything they could from their European brothers. Beginning at the Abbey of Westmalle, they slowly made their way around Belgium, staying at the monasteries and making friends, receiving good advice and drinking some of the world's best beer. The final stop of their first trip was the Abbey of Sint Sixtus, brewer of the acclaimed Westvleteren ales. By the end of their second trip and more detailed discussions, they were confident that they had put together a realistic plan for a new brewery. Following monastic tradition, the monks voted and confirmed the project by an overwhelming majority to build America's first Trappist brewery.

Observing Trappist tradition, they named their brewery, and the beer, Spencer after their beloved town of Spencer, Massachusetts.

Wonderful beer from St. Josph's Abbey in Spencer (worth a visit if you're in the vicinity). Unfortunately no longer made. A flavourful and well-balanced ale, honouring the Trappist tradition.

Its a shame this beer will no longer be made. I hope that the monks are in good health, physical and spiritual and that the monastery thrives. But I will miss their beer.

Not a bad beer by this brewery. Paters beer is great example. Too bad they stopped brewing.

Spencer has great beers overall. Terrible loss to those that enjoy proper beers since they are no longer brewing. Get it while ya can.

I love Spencer Ale. It's what I drink when for special occasions and when my own homebrew table beer or saisons aren't ready to drink. I love the yeast spice and the classic belgian flavors. I'd love to know what yeast and hops Spencer uses in this.

America's Abbey Ale

I have had several Belgian ales over the years and have recently been focusing more on Abbey Ales (all varieties). I tried several different Spencer ales, but I enjoyed the Trappist Ale the most. The hint of apricot hit the right note on this duvel. This is the best of the Spencer Abbey ales. I did not try any of the IPAs, since my preference is to the darker, less hoppy beers and ales. The monks at the Abbey hit the mark on this duvel. I hope the brothers stay the course and continue with their divine work.

Being from Belgium, I must say that I really like that beer to the point where I gave a bottle to a friend and he liked it too. I told him that it was brewed in a monastery in MA and made just like the monks in Belgium. He said that he will buy it.

Spencer Trappist Ale is a very special beer which can be difficult to enjoy depending on your location. Thanks to the brewery and Monastery Greetings for the opportunity to sample some fine work from Joseph's Abbey. The shipment was very well cared for and arrived in impeccable condition. Note that shipping is not climate controlled so choose appropriate weather in depending on your approximate shipping route.

Foxtrot 101st

This beer has two levels of flavor that can be altered by carefully pouring the beer into the proper Spencer "Chalice" and allowing the yeast (the B complex vitamins) to remain at the bottom, to be consumed separately. When poured like that, the flavor is light and aromatic. Giving a brisk sensation at the back of the palette. With a crisp aftertaste. If the yeast is married to the beer by a swift shake prior to pouring, or when its consumed separately, the flavors are heavier and more complex. In the second form, the beer can be allowed to lose its chill and enjoyed over a long period, like a fine wine. With a cigar.

OVERALL IMPRESSION: A very refreshing Trappist ale, it is good to see a Trappist Single being made - not too many of them around, let alone an American Trappist! It was worth the original effort to get our hands on this beer. For more, visit our BREWVIEW ON SPENCER TRAPPIST ALE: https://belgianbeerjournal.com/brewviews/spencertrappistale
