The Best Variety Sampler is ideal for those who want to taste examples of Belgian ales that represent a range of unique styles. Belgian-Style Ales has hand-selected these brews to ensure a diverse sampling of beers that demonstrate the variety of options that the craft of Belgian brewing has to offer. For the beginner or the expert beer lover, this sampler is a convenient and satisfying way to compare some of the finest Belgian ales that exemplify different styles. All six have ratings of 93 or higher.

Duvel Belgian Golden Ale (ABV 8.5%)
is rated 99 on and 94 on It is top-fermented and bottle-conditioned in a process that takes three months, resulting in a pale golden brew with a full creamy head, aromas of citrus, apple, bananas and hops, and flavor notes of pale malts, fruity esters and subtle spice. Mouth-feel is silky smooth and finish is dry.

McChouffe Brown Ale (ABV 8.0%)
is rated 98 on and 94 on A dark reddish brown Belgian Ale patterned after its Scotch Ale counterparts, it is top-fermented and bottle-conditioned. Boasts aromas of toffee, caramel, anise and dried fruits while achieving a taste that is surprisingly mild, malty and fruity, with a dry, warm and spicy finish.

De Dolle Extra Export Stout (ABV 9.0%)
is rated 98 on and 87 on It is a Belgian-ized version of the classic English Imperial stout. It is a top-fermented and bottle-conditioned brew that pours black with a lasting, frothy beige head. Aromas of dark fruit, espresso, and chocolate lead to a similar flavor profile that also includes notes of caramel, toffee, raspberry and licorice. The finish is tart and dry.

Rodenbach Classic Aged Sour Ale (ABV 5.2%)
is rated 93 on and 90 on This sour ale blend of 1/4 aged "mother beer" -- which has matured in oak at least two years -- with 3/4 of a younger, sweeter counterpart is a great introduction to the Flemish sour ale style. Flavors include sour cherry, vinegar, dark berry, green apple and grape with notes of caramel and coffee; mouthfeel is medium bodied, with active carbonation.

Hoegaarden White (ABV 4.9%)
is rated 93 on and 90 on It is a refreshing, unfiltered wheat beer (Witbier) with a cloudy, pale gold appearance and a lasting white head. Aromas of peppery yeast, citrus and spice give an indication of its classic witbier taste, which is enhanced by the addition of orange peel and coriander to the brew. Bubbly carbonation, a bit of tartness, and a relatively low ABV add to its drinkability.

Corsendonk Christmas Ale (ABV 8.1%)
is rated 98 on and 98 on This rich, dark, festive brew has aromas of chocolate malt and spiciness reminiscent of the smells of holiday baking. Silky smooth on the palate, it's predominantly malty, with smoky, spicy and citrusy notes and a lingering finish that is lightly tart and malty. Bottle-conditioned for a fresh, lively taste.
