The Oak Melchior Special Edition Pur Sang (ABV 11%) from Brouwerij Alvinne is their Melchior (a Belgian Strong Ale) aged for 9 months on Bordeaux wine barrels, with fresh cherries added for the last 3 months of aging.

It pours a rich red amber color with a small, quickly dissipating head. Aromas of red wine, cherries, toasted oak, and spice give a good indication of the taste, which features an earthy sweetness balanced by tart cherry and drying oak. Full-bodied, with soft carbonation and well-hidden alcohol. Ratebeer.com rating: 95 (out of 100) 16.9 oz capped bottle.

The Alvinne Brewery was begun in 2004 by Davy Spiessens and Glenn Castelein. They were joined by Marc DeKeukeleire who brought his own cultivated yeast strain known as Morpheus, which has a very high alcohol tolerance. They aim to produce world class, innovative beers of mixed fermentation, making creative use of malt, water, hops, and yeast, and then aging their base beers on used oak barrels and/or with fruits, berries, or flowers.
