Sour'ire de Mortagne (ABV 11%) is another innovation from Brouwerij Alvinne: a "sour quadruple" aged in oak wine barrels which skillfully balances sweet and sour tones.

Unfiltered and unpasteurized like all the Alvinne beers, it pours red brown with a beige head and offers inviting sweet and sour aromas with hints of dark red fruit, oak, and vanilla.

Medium bodied, with soft carbonation, the taste includes tart cherry, oak, notes of caramel malt, and a hint of chocolate. Ratebeer.com rating: 98 (out of 100) 11.2 oz capped bottle.

The Alvinne Brewery was begun in 2004 by Davy Spiessens and Glenn Castelein. They were joined by Marc DeKeukeleire who brought his own cultivated yeast strain known as Morpheus, which has a very high alcohol tolerance. They aim to produce world class, innovative beers of mixed fermentation, making creative use of malt, water, hops, and yeast, and then aging their base beers on used oak barrels and/or with fruits, berries, or flowers.
